I have a particularly strong urge to tell a long-time internet friend that I have a giant crush on her. We've never met in person and we don't communicate online half as much as I'd like to, so I'm afraid she'd think I was weird, but the idea is awfully tempting. I think New Year's Day is making me feel a bit reckless. :-D
I think I should maybe try to start writing here again. There is a lot of stuff I'd like to talk about with people, that I don't get to talk about enough in real life, because I lack a social life and lack friends that I see on a regular basis with whom I could discuss things.
I may start one or two other LJ accounts. I'm thinking of using this one as sort of a "professional/creative" journal as I try to get my theater group revived and possibly expand it into producing art in other media as well. We're The Waking Dreaming Theater Company and we may expand into being Waking Dreaming Arts or something like that, so this would be a good journal to use for that. I'm thinking of getting another LJ account to do more personal writing, and either making a filter for spiritual/religious topics (which are on my mind a lot lately) or even making a third LJ to handle that kind of writing. We'll see what I decide. All I know is that I think I ought to start writing again and this would probably be a good place to do it.

I've hit a wall when it comes to school.
I'm so tired of literary analysis. I have a ten-to-fifteen page literary analysis paper due at the end of this semester, for medieval literature. I have a really hard time making literary analysis papers more than three or four pages long. The whole process of analyzing literature seems pointless to me. It feels like some kind of intellectual masturbation that doesn't really accomplish anything worthwhile.
I'm an English major because I love to read and I thought studying literature would be a fantastic college experience for me. It's turned out to be pretty miserable. I keep hoping I'll get the hang of it and change my mind about it but it hasn't happened yet and I don't know if it will. It doesn't seem terribly likely at this point.
For the first time ever, I'm not at all excited about registering for classes for next semester. I feel aimless and like I'm wasting my time. I think I'd rather be majoring in history or anthropology but my college doesn't offer those as majors and there is a lot of stuff, especially medical issues, which are keeping me from transferring anywhere else yet. I really don't know what I want to do. I might consider changing to a "social sciences" major but I'm not sure. My true preference would be to take a semester off, but the last time I did that, it turned into taking seven years off, and I already feel like I've wasted too much time.

I love it when things start to just work in my head.
I sometimes forget that I simply need to force them for it to happen.
And no, things just working and being forced to work really isn't contradictory in this case.
It's like when you fix something and you expect it to run okay. But then once it gets going, you find it's working even better than you expected.
Very nice feeling!

Oh, what a good question!
There are so many different bands and singers and such that I can recommend.
First, one must check out Amanda Palmer!
I'm also super into The Decemberists.
Then there's The Tiger Lillies.
Or how about Jason Webley?
Or probably my favorite band lately, The World/Inferno Friendship Society?!
That's all I can think of right now!

Jun. 9th, 2009 06:34 pmThe problem with Livejournal is that we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. Hence, I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don’t know about you.
I've just raised the flag, so to speak, by sending out the the first official Waking Dreaming Theater Company e-mail in five years. I've announced our schedule for this year and invited previous participants to come audition again.
You know, we don't actually HAVE a flag. Someone should design one for us.

After the play in Lexington,
kschap and I headed back home to Maine but decided to stop in Portsmouth, New Hampshire at one of our favorite restaurants. I first went to The Friendly Toast in 1998 when the girl I was dating at the time took me there. I loved it then and still love it now. They have mostly breakfast food and unusual sorts of sandwiches. Lots of vegetarian options, too. On the weekends they're open 24 hours. So it was the perfect place to go to eat when leaving Lexington at 11 pm and passing through Portsmouth about midnight.
Kelley got a "Superman Scramble" which was eggs with asparagus, broccoli, banana peppers, and maybe one or two other things with a cilantro sauce of some sort. I tasted it and it was really good. I got a Cuban sandwich which was ham, cheese, pickles (and I think maybe mine had yellow peppers, too) in a tortilla. Very yummy.
Towards the end of the meal, the server comes up to check on us.
"So, do you wanna hook up?" I hear.
I know my eyes got huge. I hope my jaw didn't drop. No no, that can't be right, I think to myself.
"I'm sorry, what?" I say.
"Are you both doing okay?" she says.
"Oh yeah, fine, fine thanks," I say.
She smiles and walks away.
Kelley asks what's up with me.
"I don't even want to tell you what I thought she said the first time," I whisper at Kelley.
Kelley, baffled, says, "Why not?"
"I'm a little embarrassed, I don't know how I thought she said what I thought she said when all she asked was how we were doing," I explain.
"Now you've got to tell me."
"All right, I thought she said, 'Do you wanna hook up?' and I was blown away because you're sitting right there, clearly my girlfriend, and that would have been pretty inappropriate unless you were included in the invitation, too."
"I don't know how you got 'Do you wanna hook up?' out of 'Are you doing okay?' but it's too bad she didn't say that because she's cute," Kelley responds.
Folks, I have hearing loss and hear things wrong all the time. All the time. But usually what actually happens is that I hear something that ends up being a jumble in my ears and I try to decipher it. For instance, last fall, Kelley and I were in Cambridge and I thought I heard someone ask someone else, "Do I look like a goat pasture?" What I mostly heard was "Do I look like mumble mumble mumble?" and tried to decipher it from the mumbled sounds I thought I picked up. What that person actually said, according to Kelley later, was "Do I look like a junkie to you?"
This was different. I very clearly, with no mumbling involved, heard the words, "So, do you wanna hook up?" It wasn't a case of deciphering something I was unsure about. It sounded 100% enunciated in my ears and brain. The only reason I questioned it was because I know I hear things wrong very frequently and also that no one has ever just asked me if I wanted to hook up before.
So weird. I don't know how I heard that so clearly when it wasn't what she said at all.
Maybe I was hallucinating from still being on a high because Amanda Palmer had just kissed me an hour before!

I got kissed by Amanda Palmer!
May. 12th, 2009 02:16 pmLast Saturday, Kelley and I went to Lexington, Massachusetts to see Amanda Palmer and a group of high school students perform a play they had written and produced together called "With The Needle That Sings In Her Heart." It was inspired by Neutral Milk Hotel's album, "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea." The play was about Anne Frank coping with being in a concentration camp. It was very complicated and very moving and I'm still sort of digesting the whole thing. I don't think I "got" all of it but I'll tell you one thing: I have never been so impressed by a high school production in my whole life. And it wasn't just Amanda's influence. These kids were really good at their acting craft. The director at their school must have some amazing skills. We might have had a few people who were that good when I was in high school, but most weren't, including myself. I got to talk to one of the girls in the cast after the play and tell her how proud I was of all of them for writing, producing, and acting in such a skilled and moving production.
This was my seventh time meeting Amanda Palmer. We hung around while she was chatting with people after the play. She's so wonderful about talking with people who want to connect with her. She focuses her attention completely and entirely on whoever she's talking to at any particular moment. I don't think many celebrities do that. She poses for pictures, holds hands, signs autographs, and practically anything else people ask her to do.
So I waited a while to get to chat with her since
kschap and I weren't in any particular hurry to leave and there were probably people there who hadn't met her before, who deserved to have priority. She finally got around to me, smiled hugely, crouched down, and said, "It's great to see you! How have you been?" or something similar to that. I'm always sort of surprised she remembers me from one time to the next so I said, "I'm pretty great, you remember me?" She takes my hand and says, "Of course I remember you, you're unforgettable." So we chat a few minutes, she signs stuff for me and Kelley, and then goes on to talk to the last few people standing around.
I tell Kelley, "I think I'm going to ask her for a hug once she's done talking to everyone else." So we move out of the way, wait for a few minutes, and catch her when she's about to leave. I say, "I wondered, could I ask you for a hug?" She says, "Fuck yeah!" and grabs me and hugs me tight. Then, completely unexpectedly, she kisses me smack on the right side of the neck. I think I might have levitated out of my wheelchair for a couple seconds, I was so elated. I managed to say, "Oh my god, you're so sweet!" in a voice that was much higher than normal for me and we went on our way.
I think I'll always be blown away that I got kissed by Amanda Palmer!

Mail Order Comic Books?
May. 4th, 2009 10:32 pmFor those of you who read comic books, and don't have a comic book store within easy distance of your home, where do you get your comic books? Is there a good mail order company that won't demand my first born child to cover shipping charges? I know someone out there has to have recommendations for me.
